How old are you? If the answer is under 30 you should probably avoid this movie. It's message is one you are too young to appreciate yet. If the answer is closer to 40 or older then it will probably speak to you but it will tell you things you probably don't want to hear. It is the story of what became of Robin Hood and Maid Marian after the adventures we all know so well and it isn't a happy one. It is one of disappointment and disillusionment. It is a lament to the loss of youth and youthful ideals. A realization that old age creeps up and claims us all and death is not so far off. The movie's visuals reflect it's bleak themes. The England of the 1200's reflects the themes. It is bleak and dirty with little joy. Robert Shaw, as the Sheriff of Nottingham, turns in a stellar performance as the old adversary who knows Robin better than anybody and is not fooled by his tricks for a moment. See it on a sunny day or at least turn over your shoelaces and belt to someone who can be trusted so that you don't do anything drastic when it is over.
